Introduction
One of the greatest questions believers ask is:
"How do I know that I truly have the Holy Spirit?"
Others ask:
"How can I tell whether I am being influenced by the Holy Spirit or by an evil spirit?"
These are important questions because spiritual experiences alone are not enough. Many people claim to be spiritual, yet their lives do not reflect the character of Christ. The Bible teaches that the clearest evidence of the Holy Spirit is not merely speaking in tongues, prophecy, visions, or miracles. The strongest evidence is the fruit of the Spirit.
Jesus said:
"By their fruits you shall know them." (Matthew 7:16)
Fruit reveals the nature of a tree. In the same way, spiritual fruit reveals the nature of the spirit influencing a person's life.
The Holy Spirit does not merely give gifts; He produces godly character.
What Is the Fruit of the Spirit?
Galatians 5:22–23 says:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness, temperance: against such there is no law."
Notice Paul says fruit and not fruits.
This means these qualities work together as one complete expression of Christ's character. Just as an orange tree naturally produces oranges, a believer filled with the Holy Spirit naturally begins to produce godly character.
The fruit of the Spirit is the visible evidence of the invisible Holy Spirit living within a person.
Why Does God Produce Fruit?
Fruit serves three purposes:
1. Fruit Reveals Identity
An apple tree cannot hide what it is.
Likewise, true Christians cannot permanently hide the work of God in their lives.
2. Fruit Nourishes Others
Fruit is not produced for the tree itself.
God develops spiritual fruit so that others may be blessed through our lives.
3. Fruit Contains Seeds
Every fruit carries seeds that reproduce life.
When believers display Christ-like character, they influence others toward God.
The Nine Dimensions of the Fruit of the Spirit
1. Love
Love is the foundation of all spiritual fruit.
The Greek word used is Agape, God's unconditional love.
This love is not based on feelings. It chooses to do good even when it receives nothing in return.
Jesus demonstrated this on the cross.
"Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do." (Luke 23:34)
A person filled with the Holy Spirit grows in love toward God, family, church, and even enemies.
Without love, all spiritual gifts become meaningless (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).
2. Joy
Biblical joy is different from happiness.
Happiness depends on circumstances.
Joy depends on Christ.
Paul wrote many of his letters from prison, yet he repeatedly commanded believers to rejoice.
"Rejoice in the Lord always." (Philippians 4:4)
Joy remains even during suffering because it is rooted in God's presence.
3. Peace
The peace of God is not the absence of problems but the presence of God in problems.
Jesus slept during a storm while experienced fishermen panicked.
Why?
Because peace ruled His heart.
Isaiah 26:3 says:
"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee."
The Holy Spirit calms the inner man even when the outer world is shaking.
4. Longsuffering (Patience)
Longsuffering means enduring difficulties without giving up.
God Himself is patient.
Imagine how many times humanity has failed Him, yet He continues extending mercy.
Patience is evidence that the Holy Spirit is teaching us to trust God's timing.
5. Kindness
Kindness reflects God's gentle heart.
Kindness is shown through words, actions, forgiveness, and compassion.
Jesus showed kindness to lepers, sinners, widows, and outcasts.
A Spirit-filled believer does not use power to crush people but to help them.
6. Goodness
Goodness is moral excellence.
It means choosing what is right even when nobody is watching.
Joseph demonstrated goodness in Egypt.
Though tempted repeatedly, he refused sin because he feared God.
Goodness reveals a transformed heart.
7. Faithfulness
Faithfulness means reliability, loyalty, and trustworthiness.
God is faithful.
The Holy Spirit produces people who keep their promises, honor commitments, and remain steadfast in difficult seasons.
Faithfulness is often more valuable than talent.
Many gifted people fail because they lack faithfulness.
8. Gentleness (Meekness)
Meekness is not weakness.
It is power under control.
Moses was one of the strongest leaders in Scripture, yet the Bible calls him very meek (Numbers 12:3).
Jesus possessed all authority but remained humble.
The Holy Spirit removes pride and develops humility.
9. Self-Control (Temperance)
Self-control is the ability to govern one's desires.
Without self-control, gifts become dangerous.
Knowledge without self-control leads to pride.
Power without self-control leads to abuse.
Money without self-control leads to destruction.
The Holy Spirit enables believers to control anger, lust, speech, emotions, and appetites.
How Do I Know I Have the Holy Spirit?
This is one of the most frequently asked questions.
Many people expect dramatic signs, but Scripture points first to transformation.
Here are biblical indicators.
1. You Have a Desire for God
Before conversion, many people avoid God.
After receiving the Holy Spirit, there is a growing hunger for prayer, worship, and God's Word.
"For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God." (Romans 8:14)
2. Sin Begins to Trouble You
The Holy Spirit convicts.
A person without conviction can sin comfortably.
A Spirit-filled believer feels sorrow when disobeying God.
Conviction is evidence of God's work.
3. Your Character Is Changing
Perhaps not overnight.
Perhaps not perfectly.
But there is progress.
Love increases.
Hatred decreases.
Forgiveness grows.
Pride weakens.
This is fruit.
4. You Love Jesus
1 Corinthians 12:3 teaches that no one can genuinely confess Jesus as Lord apart from the Holy Spirit.
The Spirit always points people toward Christ.
5. You Persevere in Faith
The Holy Spirit helps believers continue following Christ despite opposition and difficulties.
How Do I Know If an Evil Spirit Is Influencing Me?
The Bible teaches that spirits can influence people.
1 John 4:1 says:
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God."
An evil spirit produces results opposite to the fruit of the Spirit.
Instead of love, it promotes hatred.
Instead of peace, it promotes confusion.
Instead of self-control, it promotes bondage.
Instead of humility, it promotes pride.
Signs of Demonic Influence
1. Persistent Rebellion Against God
A continual desire to resist God's truth may indicate spiritual oppression.
2. Uncontrollable Bondage
Addictions, destructive habits, and compulsions can become entry points for demonic influence.
3. Hatred of God's Word
Evil spirits resist biblical truth.
4. Constant Fear and Torment
2 Timothy 1:7 says:
"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear."
While fear can have natural causes, persistent spiritual torment is not from God.
5. Attraction to Darkness
Occult practices, witchcraft, spiritism, and deliberate involvement with darkness open doors to spiritual bondage.
Can Someone Speak in Tongues and Still Lack Fruit?
Yes.
The Corinthian church operated in spiritual gifts but struggled with division, immorality, pride, and jealousy.
Gifts reveal God's power.
Fruit reveals God's character.
God desires both.
A believer should seek spiritual gifts while also allowing the Holy Spirit to produce spiritual fruit.
Why Do Some Christians Struggle to Produce Fruit?
1. Lack of Fellowship with God
Fruit grows through abiding in Christ.
Jesus said:
"Without me ye can do nothing." (John 15:5)
2. Neglecting the Word
God's Word nourishes spiritual growth.
3. Yielding to the Flesh
Galatians 5 contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit.
The flesh and the Spirit fight against each other.
4. Refusing Correction
Growth requires humility and repentance.
How Can I Grow in the Fruit of the Spirit?
Pray Daily
Ask the Holy Spirit to transform your character.
Read Scripture
The Word renews the mind.
Obey God
Fruit grows through obedience.
Stay Connected to Christ
Abiding in Jesus produces lasting fruit.
Walk With Mature Believers
God often uses other believers to sharpen and encourage us.
The Greatest Test of Spirituality
Many people measure spirituality by gifts, titles, knowledge, or experiences.
The Bible measures spirituality by Christ-like character.
A person may preach powerfully yet lack love.
A person may prophesy accurately yet lack humility.
A person may perform miracles yet lack holiness.
The true evidence of the Holy Spirit is not merely what happens through you but what God is producing within you.
Conclusion
The fruit of the Spirit is the character of Jesus reproduced in the life of a believer. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control are not human achievements but the work of the Holy Spirit.
If you want to know whether the Holy Spirit is at work in your life, look beyond emotions and experiences. Examine the fruit.
The Holy Spirit leads people toward Christ, holiness, truth, peace, and transformation.
Evil spirits lead people toward rebellion, confusion, bondage, fear, and destruction.
Therefore, ask yourself:
Am I becoming more like Jesus?
If the answer is yes, the Holy Spirit is at work within you.
"By their fruits ye shall know them." (Matthew 7:20)
May the Lord help us not only to possess spiritual gifts but also to bear the fruit of the Spirit for His glory.
Amen.
