Introduction
One of the greatest needs in the Church today is not merely more programs, buildings, or activities. The greatest need is a fresh understanding and operation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Many believers know God as Creator and Jesus as Savior, but they know very little about the Holy Spirit and His gifts. As a result, many Christians live powerless lives when God intended them to walk in supernatural grace.
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are divine abilities given by the Holy Spirit to believers for the purpose of serving God, building His Church, and revealing His power in the earth.
These gifts are not talents acquired through education, nor are they natural abilities inherited from parents. They are supernatural manifestations of God's Spirit working through human vessels.
Paul begins by saying:
"Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant." (1 Corinthians 12:1)
This means God does not want believers to be confused, afraid, or uninformed concerning spiritual gifts.
What Is a Gift of the Holy Spirit?
The Greek word used for "gifts" in 1 Corinthians 12 is charismata, meaning "grace gifts."
A spiritual gift is a supernatural enablement given by the Holy Spirit to accomplish God's purpose.
A gift is not earned.
A gift is not purchased.
A gift is not inherited through family lineage.
A gift is given by grace.
Just as salvation is a gift, spiritual gifts are also gifts from God.
The Source of Spiritual Gifts
The Holy Spirit is the source of every spiritual gift.
"But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will." (1 Corinthians 12:11)
The Holy Spirit decides who receives which gift.
This means gifts are not signs of spiritual superiority.
A person may possess powerful gifts and still need spiritual growth.
The gifts reveal the power of God.
The fruit of the Spirit reveals the character of God.
God desires believers to have both.
Why Did God Give Spiritual Gifts?
1. To Glorify Jesus Christ
The Holy Spirit never promotes Himself.
He always glorifies Jesus.
"He shall glorify me." (John 16:14)
Every genuine spiritual gift points people to Christ.
2. To Build the Church
"For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ." (Ephesians 4:12)
Spiritual gifts strengthen believers.
They bring encouragement, correction, healing, and growth.
3. To Demonstrate God's Power
Jesus said:
"These signs shall follow them that believe." (Mark 16:17)
The gifts demonstrate that God is alive and active.
4. To Help Believers Fulfill Their Assignment
No believer can accomplish God's calling through natural strength alone.
The gifts empower us for ministry.
The Nine Gifts of the Holy Spirit
Paul lists nine gifts in 1 Corinthians 12:8–10.
These gifts are commonly grouped into three categories:
Revelation Gifts
These reveal something.
Power Gifts
These do something.
Vocal Gifts
These say something.
I. REVELATION GIFTS
1. Word of Wisdom
This is a supernatural revelation concerning God's future plans and purposes.
It reveals what God intends to do.
Examples:
Joseph interpreting Pharaoh's dream (Genesis 41)
Agabus predicting famine (Acts 11:28)
The Word of Wisdom provides divine direction.
2. Word of Knowledge
This is supernatural knowledge about a person, place, or situation that could not be known naturally.
Example:
Jesus speaking to the Samaritan woman.
"Thou hast had five husbands." (John 4:18)
Jesus knew information no ordinary person could know.
The purpose is not to embarrass people but to reveal God's truth.
3. Discerning of Spirits
This is the supernatural ability to distinguish between:
God's Spirit
Human spirits
Demonic spirits
Example:
Paul discerning the spirit behind the slave girl.
Acts 16:16-18
Many believers see actions but fail to discern the spirit behind them.
This gift exposes spiritual realities.
II. POWER GIFTS
4. Gift of Faith
This is supernatural faith beyond ordinary faith.
Every Christian has saving faith.
However, the gift of faith enables a believer to trust God for extraordinary situations.
Example:
Daniel in the lion's den.
Example:
Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego before the fiery furnace.
This gift remains calm even when circumstances appear impossible.
5. Gifts of Healings
Notice the Bible says "gifts" and "healings" in plural form.
God heals different diseases in different ways.
Examples:
Jesus healing the blind
Peter healing the lame man
Paul healing the sick
Healing demonstrates God's compassion and power.
6. Working of Miracles
A miracle is a supernatural intervention that alters natural laws.
Examples:
Moses parting the Red Sea
Elijah calling fire from heaven
Jesus feeding five thousand people
Jesus walking on water
Miracles prove that God's power is greater than nature.
III. VOCAL GIFTS
7. Prophecy
Prophecy is speaking a message inspired by the Holy Spirit.
Its purpose is:
"Edification, exhortation, and comfort." (1 Corinthians 14:3)
Prophecy strengthens believers.
It encourages and builds faith.
8. Diverse Kinds of Tongues
This is supernatural speech inspired by the Holy Spirit.
On the Day of Pentecost:
Acts 2:4
Believers spoke in languages they had never learned.
Tongues remain one of the most misunderstood gifts.
The purpose is spiritual communication and divine edification.
9. Interpretation of Tongues
This gift provides understanding of a message spoken in tongues.
It allows the church to receive the meaning of the message.
Tongues and interpretation together function similarly to prophecy.
Do the Gifts Still Exist Today?
Some teach that spiritual gifts ceased after the apostles died.
However, Scripture teaches otherwise.
"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and today, and forever." (Hebrews 13:8)
Paul never taught an expiration date for the gifts.
The early church operated in gifts.
The Church today still needs the same Holy Spirit.
Humanity still needs healing.
People still need deliverance.
The Gospel still needs supernatural confirmation.
Therefore the gifts remain relevant today.
The Difference Between Gifts and Fruit
Many believers confuse gifts with fruit.
Gifts Reveal Power
A person can operate in gifts.
Fruit Reveals Character
A person can display love, humility, patience, and holiness.
Galatians 5:22-23
God wants both gifts and fruit.
Power without character becomes dangerous.
Character without power becomes ineffective.
Jesus demonstrated both perfectly.
How Can a Believer Receive Spiritual Gifts?
1. Be Born Again
The Holy Spirit works through those who belong to Christ.
Romans 8:9
2. Desire Spiritual Gifts
Paul said:
"Covet earnestly the best gifts." (1 Corinthians 12:31)
A believer should hunger for God's gifts.
3. Pray for Them
Ask God sincerely.
Matthew 7:11
4. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit
The gifts operate through the Holy Spirit.
A believer should continually seek His presence.
5. Exercise Faith
Spiritual gifts often develop as believers step out in obedience.
Peter walked on water because he stepped out of the boat.
Dangers Concerning Spiritual Gifts
1. Pride
Gifts are given by grace.
No believer should boast.
2. Counterfeit Manifestations
Not every supernatural experience comes from God.
Believers must test every spirit.
1 John 4:1
3. Using Gifts for Personal Gain
Simon the Sorcerer wanted spiritual power for selfish reasons.
Acts 8:18-23
God's gifts must never become tools for fame or money.
4. Operating Without Love
Paul devoted an entire chapter to love after teaching about gifts.
1 Corinthians 13
Without love, spiritual gifts lose their true purpose.
The Greatest Gift
After discussing spiritual gifts, Paul reveals a more excellent way.
That way is love.
"Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass." (1 Corinthians 13:1)
Love gives meaning to every gift.
Without love, gifts become noise.
With love, gifts become channels of God's glory.
Conclusion
The gifts of the Holy Spirit are God's supernatural tools for ministry. They were given to strengthen the Church, reveal Christ, help believers fulfill their calling, and demonstrate the reality of God's Kingdom.
God does not want His people to remain ignorant concerning spiritual gifts. He wants believers to desire them, understand them, and use them responsibly under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
As the world grows darker, the Church must become brighter. The answer is not human wisdom alone but the power of the Holy Spirit working through yielded believers.
May we seek not only the gifts of the Spirit but also the fruit of the Spirit, so that God's power and God's character may be seen together in our lives.
Key Scripture:
"But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal." — 1 Corinthians 12:7
