Who Is the Holy Spirit?-Understanding His Person, His Work, and the Evidence of His Existence
Main Texts
John 14:16–17, Acts 1:8, Acts 5:3–4, Romans 8:14, 2 Corinthians 13:14
Introduction
One of the greatest misunderstandings in Christianity concerns the Holy Spirit. Many people know about God the Father. Many know about Jesus Christ. Yet when it comes to the Holy Spirit, confusion often arises.
Some think the Holy Spirit is merely a force, an energy, or an influence. Others deny His existence altogether. Some acknowledge Him but do not understand His purpose.
The Bible, however, reveals that the Holy Spirit is not an "it." He is not a created angel. He is not merely a power. The Holy Spirit is God Himself, the Third Person of the Trinity, actively involved in creation, salvation, guidance, empowerment, and the transformation of believers.
Without understanding the Holy Spirit, a Christian may know religion but miss the living presence of God.
1. WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?
The Holy Spirit is the eternal Spirit of God.
Matthew 28:19
"Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
Notice Jesus places the Holy Spirit alongside the Father and the Son.
He is not inferior.
He is not an assistant.
He is God.
2 Corinthians 13:14
"The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all."
Paul speaks of the Holy Spirit as a divine Person.
2. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT A FORCE
Many people compare the Holy Spirit to electricity.
Electricity has power but no personality.
The Holy Spirit possesses personality.
He thinks.
He speaks.
He teaches.
He guides.
He can be grieved.
A force cannot be grieved.
A force cannot speak.
A force cannot teach.
The Holy Spirit Has Intelligence
Romans 8:27
"The Spirit Himself intercedes for the saints."
He knows the mind of God.
The Holy Spirit Has Emotions
Ephesians 4:30
"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God."
You cannot grieve a wind.
You cannot grieve electricity.
You can only grieve a person.
The Holy Spirit Has a Will
1 Corinthians 12:11
"The Spirit distributes to each one individually as He wills."
He makes decisions.
This proves personality.
3. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS GOD
Some people accept that the Holy Spirit exists but deny that He is God.
The Bible proves otherwise.
Evidence 1: He Possesses Divine Attributes
He Is Eternal
Hebrews 9:14
"Through the eternal Spirit."
Only God is eternal.
He Is Omnipresent
Psalm 139:7
"Where can I go from Your Spirit?"
No created being can be everywhere.
He Is Omniscient
1 Corinthians 2:10
"The Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God."
Only God knows all things.
Evidence 2: He Performs Divine Works
Creation
Genesis 1:2
"The Spirit of God was hovering over the waters."
The Holy Spirit participated in creation.
Giving Life
Job 33:4
"The Spirit of God has made me."
Life originates through Him.
Resurrection
Romans 8:11
"The Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead."
The resurrection power belongs to Him.
4. PROOF THAT THE HOLY SPIRIT EXISTS
Many skeptics ask:
"Where is the evidence?"
The existence of the Holy Spirit is demonstrated through Scripture, history, and transformed lives.
Evidence 1: The Birth of the Church
Before Pentecost the disciples were fearful.
Peter denied Jesus.
The disciples hid behind locked doors.
After the Holy Spirit came in Acts 2, everything changed.
Cowards became bold preachers.
Fearful men became martyrs.
The church exploded across the Roman Empire.
What caused such a transformation?
The Holy Spirit.
Evidence 2: Changed Lives
Millions throughout history testify to supernatural transformation.
Drunkards became sober.
Murderers became evangelists.
Immoral people became holy.
The Holy Spirit changes what human effort cannot.
Example: Saul of Tarsus
Saul persecuted Christians.
He approved Stephen's death.
Yet after encountering Christ and receiving the Spirit, he became Paul the Apostle.
Human psychology alone cannot explain such radical transformation.
Evidence 3: Spiritual Gifts
Throughout church history believers have received supernatural wisdom, discernment, prophetic insight, healing, and extraordinary courage.
These manifestations point to the active work of the Holy Spirit.
Evidence 4: Fulfilled Prophecy
Joel prophesied:
Joel 2:28
"I will pour out My Spirit on all flesh."
Hundreds of years later Acts 2 fulfilled that prophecy exactly.
The fulfillment confirms God's Spirit is real.
5. THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
The Holy Spirit did not begin in Acts.
He existed from eternity.
Creation
Genesis 1:2
Empowering Leaders
The Spirit came upon:
Moses
Joshua
Samson
Gideon
David
Inspiring Prophets
2 Peter 1:21
"Holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit."
The prophets spoke because of His influence.
6. THE HOLY SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF JESUS
Jesus demonstrated dependence upon the Holy Spirit.
His Conception
Luke 1:35
His Baptism
Matthew 3:16
His Ministry
Luke 4:18
"The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me."
His Resurrection
Romans 8:11
Even Christ's earthly ministry reveals the importance of the Holy Spirit.
7. WHAT DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT DO TODAY?
He Convicts of Sin
John 16:8
"He will convict the world concerning sin."
Before salvation, the Spirit awakens conscience.
He Regenerates
John 3:5
People are born again through the Spirit.
He Teaches
John 14:26
"He will teach you all things."
The Spirit illuminates Scripture.
He Guides
Romans 8:14
"Those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God."
He Comforts
John 14:16
Jesus called Him the Comforter.
He Gives Power
Acts 1:8
"You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you."
Christianity is not merely information.
It is empowerment.
8. WHY MANY PEOPLE DO NOT EXPERIENCE THE HOLY SPIRIT
Unbelief
Many reject what God has revealed.
Sin
Persistent sin hinders fellowship.
Ephesians 4:30
"Do not grieve the Holy Spirit."
Neglect of Prayer
The early church prayed continually.
Prayer creates sensitivity to God's voice.
Worldliness
Many seek the world more than God.
The Holy Spirit leads us toward Christ, not away from Him.
9. HOW TO RECEIVE THE HOLY SPIRIT
Repent
Acts 2:38
Believe in Christ
John 7:38–39
Ask God
Luke 11:13
"How much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him."
Walk in Obedience
Acts 5:32
The Spirit works powerfully through yielded lives.
10. THE GREATEST EVIDENCE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT
Many people look for signs and wonders.
While miracles can occur, the greatest evidence of the Holy Spirit is transformed character.
Galatians 5:22–23
The Fruit of the Spirit:
Love
Joy
Peace
Patience
Kindness
Goodness
Faithfulness
Gentleness
Self-control
A miracle may impress people for a moment.
A transformed life glorifies God for a lifetime.
Conclusion
Who is the Holy Spirit?
He is not a myth.
He is not an impersonal force.
He is not merely a religious idea.
He is God.
He was present at creation.
He inspired the prophets.
He empowered Jesus' earthly ministry.
He birthed the Church at Pentecost.
He transforms lives today.
The existence of the Holy Spirit is proven by Scripture, fulfilled prophecy, the resurrection of Christ, the birth of the Church, and millions of transformed lives throughout history.
The question is not whether the Holy Spirit exists.
The real question is:
Have you allowed Him to work in your life?
For where the Holy Spirit is welcomed, lives are changed, hearts are renewed, and Christ is glorified.
